Body Dysmorphic Disorder Part Three: Treatment

Laura M. Sands Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is a serious, but treatable, mental health condition. By exploring treatment options, people with BDD can live healthy lives. In the two preceding sections of this series on body dysmorphic disorder, the symptoms and causes of BDD were discussed in depth. While people suffering with this unique form of mental illness may feel helpless, it is important to note that treatment options do exist. By seeking treatment, many with BDD have fully recovered from its symptoms or, at the very least, have managed to control the effect that this often puzzling illness has on their lives. Treatment As a mental health disorder, body dysmorphic disorder is often treated with psychotherapy to help a person determine the cause of their obsession about their physical appearance. A therapist will also help a person develop strategies for positively overcoming their obsessive thoughts. When accompanied with anxiety or depression, medications to treat these side effects may also be given. People who are suicidal or extremely depressed to the point that they are unable to function in social situations may also be hospitalized while undergoing treatment for BDD. Self-Help Suggestions In tandem with professional therapy, other suggestions that may help a person overcome BDD symptoms include: * Reading self-help books * Seeking the advice of others who have overcome this mental illness (often support groups formed around this illness are helpful) * Not having cosmetic surgery without first consulting with a therapist and especially not having surgery while depressed * Write feelings in a journal * Regularly meet with friends and family members in order to avoid isolation and falling deeper into depression * Practice holistic health strategies, like eating healthy, getting proper rest and exercising regularly * Engage in relaxing activities, such as yoga or meditation Final Thoughts on BDD Overall, body dysmorphic disorder is a very serious mental illness that often needs professional intervention in order to be properly treated and cured. While it may be difficult for people with this illness to admit that they have a problem, often its symptoms can be observed by outsiders, especially friends, family members and others who are close to a person suffering with this illness.
