Healthy lunch strategies

Healthy lunch strategies

We do like to eat, and in the middle of a busy workday the lunchtime can be a soothing interlude of calorie-driven therapy. We look forward to escaping the office and enjoying a little "sustenance" as we dissect our day. Of course, we then have to go back to our desks and somehow find the strength to make it to the end of the day after the carbohydrates and caffeine wear off. Selecting a proper lunch can be a difficult chore because we are often in a rush, and honestly we don't REALLY want to eat healthy. We talk about eating better but everything in our society suggests that it is mostly talk. People who want to eat healthier have to be serious about lifestyle change. Things won't get better overnight and it will require some sacrifices. Here are a few thoughts on how to eat healthier during the day through proper lunch and snack choices. GO PACK YOUR LUNCH! Frankly, I don't care how busy you are throughout the day. Eating healthy is about packing a lunch. When a lunch is packed, then the control lies with the individual. The lunch can include healthy proteins, fruits, vegetables, grains, and water rather than the usual fast-food offerings. If the morning is busy, pack a sack the night before rather than assume you will get up early and do it in the morning. SAY "NO" TO THE COMBO MEAL If you do go out to eat, be ready with your answer. Your answer is, "no", when you are asked if you want a combo meal. Everyone knows it is coming, but there is always that moment of weakness where the brain says, "Mmmm, chips do sound good." Resist the temptation to get the extras. Get a lean sandwich, a salad or a wrap. Pair it with water or a caffeine-free diet soda and be content without the add-ons. GET THE BOTTLED WATER One trend that does seem to be catching on is drinking water. Keeping a refillable water bottle with you at all times is a great way to eat healthy throughout the day and stay filled. Rather than getting a donut in the break room, fill up that water bottle and make it a goal to drain it a couple times per day. You may spend more time in the bathroom, but your body will thank you in the long run. DO NOT STARVE YOURSELF Finally, don't try to starve yourself at work. Eating is fine, as long as it is done in moderation. When you are packing your sack lunch, pack a few healthy snacks for those crucial times between meals. A sack of carrot sticks, some nuts, an apple, or a bag of healthy trail mix can make the day go smoother. You will have more energy, be more productive, and feel better when you go home from work every day.
