How to feed your family well

by Sophia Ryzhikov If you want to eat delicious food that is prepared in a healthy and an inexpensive way, then buying food in the store and preparing it at home will help you save on your grocery bill. Before your next shopping trip, write a list of the foods you will need. Try to incorporate those ingredients in your list that you will use for the dishes to be eaten during the week, and make it as complete as possible. Running to the store later to buy the missing ingredients will likely increase how much you spend overall because of the extra trips to the supermarket. Try to stick to the grocery list, and avoid impulse buys. Do most of your shopping first, and then buy your produce and deli meats. You have done most of your shopping at that time, and will not be tempted to buy expensive foods. Try to buy seasonal produce, which tends to be cheaper than fruits and vegetables that are out of season. Look for good cuts of meats and fish that are on sale, and that are fresh. When stocking up on packaged foods, look for store-advertised sales. Most stores sell their own generic brand of the same brand name items. If you have a store card, look for sales such as "50% off", " and "buy one, get one free". If you have coupons, take the time to buy the items advertised on the coupons. When you add the savings up, they are substantial. Of course, you want to buy cheaper, and eat foods that are nutritious and have great quality. Make sure that when you buy foods, you store them properly in the refrigerator or on the counter. Wrap the unused portions carefully, so that they will not spoil. If you buy in bulk, and have served several meals with that ingredient, you can use the leftovers in such meals as rices, sandwiches, soups, and pastas. Make sure to pack a lunch and snacks for yourself and for your family. You will have the peace of mind that everybody has a nutritious and delicious meal to eat at work or at school. You will also spend less money on going out to buy food that can easily be prepared at home. A lot of people don't use recipes in their cooking. They also feel that they don't have enough imagination to come up with ideas for great meals on their own. It is true that some recipes call for expensive ingredients, or for too many items. But there are many recipes that use only several simple ingredients. Store the recipes like that, and use them in your cooking over and over again. Also, sometimes the recipe seems intimidating at first, but turns out great, and when you add the price of the ingredients, you realize it is much cheaper to prepare this dish yourself than to buy it in a restaurant. All of these tips should make you a savvy shopper, and will help you save a bundle on your grocery shopping.
